Short Week

I love this time of year, near the holidays. This afternoon, the students each chose the name of a staff member that he/she wanted to write a thank you letter to. They get excited at the thought of making someone else smile when he/she reads the kind words.

Mrs. Milton’s students joined our students for a huge economics lesson. Ask your child what we/he/she read and talked about. I will be absent on Tuesday. The students will read some Thanksgiving poems Wednesday afternoon and have some popcorn and pretzels (left over from the Fall Festival).

Happy Thanksgiving!

“Friday, Friday, Friday is My Favorite Day…”

It would have to be a toss up as to whether teachers or students are happier when Friday at 2:30 finally rolls around. I need to be ambitious and use this time well so that I have less to do this weekend and feel less stress Monday morning, but it’s difficult to be motivated.

Have you and your child talked about The Blast to the Past books I have been reading aloud? We finished book 1, Lincoln’s Legacy. We’re almost halfway through book 2, Disney’s Dream. I love reading aloud to the students!

For the next few weeks (this week that just passed included), the students will be focusing on writing to persuade someone. It seems like a hard concept to wrap one’s head around. Ask your child if he/she gave his/her opinion about a favorite national holiday, national monument or symbol, or president when writing the persuasive paragraph.

Regarding memorization of multiplication facts, one student is dividing, two students are getting ready to begin dividing, a few students are getting close to finishing the memorization of all facts, a few more students are in the middle of memorizing facts, and few too many students are not making much progress at all. The students have been working daily on the memorization of multiplication facts. When your child brings home a rocket math test that he/she did not pass, your child should practice the facts on that paper for no more than five minutes, but he/she DOES need to practice. I have been giving students extra practice papers in class and during recess. It is in all students’ best interest to have all facts memorized by Spring Break or at least definitely by 4th grade. Please help!

Much done on Monday

There were four students absent today; that’s too bad because much happened. With only four days of school this week, I am glad that so much was accomplished. The students started the day right by completing work quietly while listening to the announcements.

Did your child check out an AR book today during library time? What did your child learn today in math class? My math class focused on patterning objectives. This week in reading class, the students have begun a new theme in their big (student anthology) reading book, one about growing with friends.

The spelling words are tricky, words like girls’, girl’s, and girls. The focus in grammar is on plural possessive nouns (like girls’). During writing time, the students wrote in their journals and then shared. There was time to work in the teamwork booklet and learn two new cursive letters (b and f). There were even a few minutes for silent reading.

Happy Veteran’s Day and thank goodness for all of our service men and women.

Monday

Mondays are so busy. I am always overwhelmed by the end of the school day. Your child will be bringing home many graded papers today. I am sorry that I did not send any home last week. Your child may also bring home photos from last week’s Fall Into Reading fun that I printed for him/her. We have three new photo collages on display on the classroom door.

The students collected $35.35 for One for Books. Awesome! When each class announced how many Lunch Bucks they had at Friday’s assembly, our class had one of the highest amounts. We have not earned a letter for On Time Club in more than two weeks. We need all students to be present and on time for that to happen.

Time to get ready for tomorrow…
